The Ethiopian Heritage Foundation
Type of Funds
The Foundation is willing to be flexible and innovative to meet a donor's wishes, but generally establishes funds in the following categories:
  • Unrestricted Funds: Can be opened with a minimum of $100. The income from these funds is used for grants and scholarships and is allocated by the Foundation's Board according to its distribution policies and processes.
  • Field-of-interest Funds: Donors indicate preferred areas of interest such as education, seniors, the arts, etc. The Foundation makes specific distributions in these areas.
  • Permanently Designated Funds: Donors designate the income from their funds to benefit specific organizations in perpetuity.
  • Organizational Endowment Funds: The Foundation manages a number of funds for organizations with all proceeds going to that organization. Donors may add their gifts to these funds.
  • Donor Advised Funds: Donors and/or their representatives recommend distributions on an annual basis, according to their own preferences and/or information supplied to them by the Foundation. Donor-advised allocations can be made on funds over $5,000.
  • Enem Lehagerie Funds: A fund is established in the name of the young person in honor of his/her 16th birthday celebration. Once the fund reaches $750, the benefactors of this Program will add $250, allowing it to become a directed fund. The child, together with his or her family, may then select the recipients of the income on an annual basis.

All funds are named by the donors - in their own name or the name of a family member or valued friend. Some funds have names that convey a specific goal or purpose, or hold special meaning for the donor. All funds are left open in perpetuity and can be added to at any time by anyone.

The Foundation has many already established designated, organizational or field of interest funds which donors may wish to add to. Donors should discuss their personal philanthropic wishes with Foundation staff so that their concerns can be matched with the best fund option.
